What Do Gemstones Mean To You?
For thousands of years, gemstones have been admired for their beauty, and even believed to possess magical powers. This belief in the 'magic' of gemstones is still with us today in the form of 'birthstones' as well as lots of other folklore and mythology. There are those that think particular gemstones can reflect certain aspects of our personality. For example, someone who loves the fiery brilliance of rubies may have a passionate and hot-blooded temperament, while the cool blue of sapphires may appeal to someone who is more reserved and thoughtful.
Most of us know that gemstones are also associated with our star sign. Emeralds for Taurus, diamonds for Aries and so on. But the list we see next to most modern horoscope predictions isn't as old as you might first think. The most commonly referred to list of birthstones was in fact compiled in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers. The reason they decided to come up with what was regarded as a definitive list was that up until that point there had been continuous dispute as to which gemstone was associated with each star sign.
Older roots in the past
The traditional list of gemstones associated with our star signs isn't the only one. The 'Traditional' list is a unique document listing a much greater range of precious and semi-precious stones which dates back to the 15th Century. Lists from Tibet and India date back even further - over 1000 years.
Each gemstone has a direct connection with the elements, and this link gives every precious and semi-precious gemstone its own mythology. For example, large diamonds are often believed to bring bad luck and misfortune, as does opal, unless they are your actual birthstone. Alternatively, turquoise is believed to attract wealth, success and romance to the wearer, as well as protecting them.
The most important thing to consider when choosing a gemstone is that it 'feels' right to you. Holding it in your hand will allow you to tune into the stone's energy and feel its vibrations. If they resonate with your own you will instinctively know that the stone is meant for you. Whatever your birthstone, gems resonate with our spiritual energy, our beliefs and our passions. They look pretty too!
